Paid summer internship at the Ayn Rand Institute

The Ayn Rand Institute’s new summer internship program combines paid office work with seminar-style courses on various topics from Ayn Rand’s corpus and their application to questions surrounding individual rights.

Topics will include, but are not limited to: an overview of Ayn Rand’s ideas; principles necessary for a free society; applications of Ayn Rand’s philosophy to current events. The internship also provides for one-on-one mentoring with ARI intellectuals.

Ghana: Compulsory SIM Card Registration Risky & Unnecessary

Ghana MobileOn January 18th 2010, the Director General of the National Communications Authority announced on the late night TV Africa discussion program, Matters Arising, that from June 30th 2010 all new mobile SIM cards will have to be registered in the name of the user before they can be activated for use on any network. He added that existing subscribers will have a period of 18 months from that date to transition to the new regime.

Kyrgyzstan to Begin Electricity Rationing Next Month

As winter approaches, the Kyrgyz Minister of Energy Iliyas Davydov has announced that electricity will be rationed in the upcoming months. Last year, electricity outages reached 12 hours or more in some parts of Kyrgyzstan. Significantly, electricity shortages were largely caused by the poor management of water resources in the country, neighboring countries, and the Kyrgyz government's illegal sale of electricity. According to international experts, clandestine electricity sales continued even during the crisis, albeit in smaller proportions.

Kyrgyzstan 2020, 2035 and 2050 Strategies To Be Worked Out

Kyrgyzstan works out development strategies through 2020, 2035 and 2050, Akylbek Japarov, Minister of Economic Development and Trade told reporters on Wednesday.

The strategies are reportedly elaborated by the Economic Development and Trade Ministry, than passed to state development institutions, as the President Kurmanbek Bakiev mentioned in one of his recent addresses to the Parliament.

Kyrgyz GDP growth hit 3.4 percent

Kyrgyz GDP growth made up 3.4 percent, and reached 114.3 billion soms in January-August 2009, the Kyrgyz Finance Ministry says.

The real GDP growth decreased by 3.1 percent compared to the same period of 2008.

Real economic growth excluding Kumtor mining enterprises averaged to 3.9 percent (5.8 percent in January-August 2008), while the production increase has been traced in agriculture (9 percent growth), services sector (4 percent) and construction sphere (24.1 percent).
